FACES

1. Tell me about your background and career thus far and your current job.

In university I majored in polymer physics (chemistry). I learned about materials science in general, not just polymers. Since joining the company, I have mainly been in charge of the development of high performance plastics (resin) for interlayer films. This film is specifically used, for instance, in between the front window of a vehicle. By putting an interlayer film between the glass, it prevents the glass from shattering when in an accident. Furthermore, in addition to having the capability of reducing the noise of a moving care, it also enhances heat insulation performance. Currently, we are working with the production department and conducting research at the Research & Development Institute to see what areas upstream can be improved, i.e. the further expansion of current performance.

2. What technological innovation do you feel is the most amazing thus far?

Synthetic polymers. When I was in high school, I experienced the interfacial polymerization of nylon in a chemistry experiment. I remember being captivated by the mysterious feeling I had at that time. Since synthetic polymer was invented, plastics, rubber and chemical textiles have been industrialized, making it possible to produce products that we currently use in our daily lives. In the sense that we provide new value to society and as it is the starting point for us to create new products, I believe this is an innovation

3. Discuss the challenges you are undertaking to achieve innovation.

I make a conscious decision to dabble in different fields to expand to my expertise. What is obvious in may own realm of expertise can potentially be a new discovery in other fields. Conversely, I think it is possible to glean new ideas from unexpected areas. Sekisui Chemical not only delves in interlayer films but also in various other products, including fine particles and tapes. Accordingly, in addition to research, I aim to learn about many domains, including the commercialization process. I aim to become a technician that can see the whole picture across various fields. The corporate culture calls for employees to tackle a challenge first without fearing failure. By combining various technologies, I hope to become a technician that overcomes walls that could not be crossed thus far.

4. What is your on off switch?

I travel to nearby locations. I take car trips to Shiga and Awajishima. I enjoy the food in these areas and the landscape.
